Air-to-air heat pumps:
decentralized and climate-friendly

Energy and heat transition:
pushing climate-friendly residential heating

From 2027 onwards, several thousand residential units per year are to be equipped with highly efficient air-to-air heat pumps.

In March 2023, LEG Immobilien SE entered into a strategic partnership with Mitsubishi Electric to actively promote the energy and heat transition in the housing industry. The aim is to replace existing decentralised gas heating appliances with the innovative air-to-air heat pump technology as a matter of priority. After an initial phase, the goal is to install several thousand heat pumps per year in LEG Immobilien SE's existing buildings from 2027 onwards.

In order to achieve this, LEG founded the joint venture dekarbo° together with Soeffing Kälte Klima GmbH in September 2023.

dekarbo° offers a total solution consisting of an air-to-air heat pump installation including a hot water solution and subsequent system support over the entire life cycle for each flat. The installation takes only one to two days per flat, after which the tenants are introduced to the user-friendly technology.

With air-to-air heat pumps, CO2 emissions can be reduced by 100 percent when using green electricity. The experience gained from their use in the LEG portfolio is collected and offered as a solution concept to the entire housing market.

In contrast to central air-to-water heat pumps, for example, there is no need to centralize the supply infrastructure and lay a line at high cost. In addition, installation is quick and uncomplicated, even in occupied buildings. Comparatively, a higher efficiency and thus lower costs for the tenants are also achievable.

Experience from pilot projects carried out in the 2022/2023 winter season also shows that in most cases the switch to an environmentally friendly heat supply is neutral in terms of rent for tenants compared with a heat supply based on fossil fuels.
